OUR PHILOSOPHY

“Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

—  JOHN ADAMS, Defense Attorney

History of Law in Montana

Long ago, Senator Wilbur Sanders, best known as a prosecutor who helped establish the vigilante’s of the west.  Sanders, who can be attributed with helping to establish the Montana Historical Society, was a major advocate of maintaining law and order.

Between 1865-1870 ten people where ordered by Sanders to be executed under the famous Ponderosa tree, located where Blake and Highland street’s now meet in Helena.

Vigilantes were so revered back in the day, that a time capsule was embedded in the Capitol building.  What’s inside?  A picture of the famous hanging tree, a copy of Thomas Dinsdale’s “Vigilantes” along with a list of the first 1700 pioneers to move to Montana.
